When to Replace Porcelain Veneers
By Stephen Rogers on August 05, 2014
For many patients, achieving an ideal smile requires some help from a cosmetic dentist. When patients have a number of aesthetic imperfections that need to be addressed, porcelain veneers can greatly improve the appearance of the smile by concealing cosmetic blemishes such as chips, cracks, discoloration, and even mild alignment problems. While porcelain veneers are a strong and durable dental fabrication, patients should not expect them to last a lifetime. The porcelain veneers treatment procedure requires minor, but permanent, alteration to the surface of the teeth, so when the veneers have become damaged or worn down, they will need to be replaced. We offer our Long Island patients porcelain veneers replacement that allows them to maintain a beautiful smile.
When Will I Need to Replace My Veneers?
For every patient, the lifespan of porcelain veneers will differ slightly. There are many factors that can affect the durability of porcelain veneers, such as oral hygiene habits and the amount of wear and tear that the veneers are exposed to. However, under optimal circumstances, porcelain veneers are likely to last for 10 to 15 years, and in some cases, up to 20 years. However, it is important not to use the calendar to determine when to replace porcelain veneers. Instead, they should be replaced when they become damaged or worn, or when other oral health problems develop that require treatment. Below are some cases in which porcelain veneers treatment may be necessary:
- The patient has suffered an injury to the mouth
- The natural teeth have developed decay or infection
- Gum disease is present
- The veneers have become discolored over time
- The veneers have weakened over time
- The bonding material that holds the porcelain veneers has worn down
By maintaining regular dental exams, patients can feel secure knowing that our dentists are observing the state of their porcelain veneers and underlying teeth in order to determine when the best time for porcelain veneers replacement is.
The Replacement Procedure
The good news is that porcelain veneers can easily be replaced. In fact, the replacement procedure is almost identical to the initial placement process. The teeth will be prepared for treatment by removing the present porcelain veneers and cleaning the teeth of as much bonding material as possible. We will then use digital imaging to come up with the precise specifications for the new set of porcelain veneers. Using our CEREC technology, the new veneers will be fabricated in-office, giving our patients the benefit of same-day porcelain veneers replacement. When the fabrications are complete, the porcelain veneers will be adhered to the surface of the teeth with a dental bonding material. This new set of porcelain veneers should give patients another 10 or more years of a beautiful smile.
