The overall aesthetics of your teeth and gums will also be taken into account to ensure that you feel confident when smiling, laughing, and being out in social settings.
Porcelain veneers are a highly effective cosmetic dentistry treatment, and extremely popular as well. We'd like to use this blog post to go over some of the basics of porcelain veneers, with a particular emphasis on the preparation process and why it's important.
About Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are thin shells of dental ceramic that are adhered to the front portions of a person's teeth. By using porcelain veneers, a patient can achieve a full smile makeover and feel more confident about his or her smile.
Dental Problems That Porcelain Veneers Can Treat
Porcelain veneers are ideal for treating the following dental problems:
- Chipped teeth
- Cracked teeth
- Tooth stains and discoloration
- Gaps between teeth
- Uneven or asymmetrical teeth
- Cosmetic malocclusion
Given this amount of versatility, you can understand why it is such a popular and effective cosmetic dentistry treatment.
Why is there a preparation process necessary for porcelain veneers?
While porcelain veneers are very thin, prepping the tooth is necessary in order to place the porcelain veneers. This preparation process involves the removal of just a little bit of tooth structure, amounting to less than a millimeter. The porcelain veneer is then placed seamlessly onto the prepped tooth, blending in with the existing tooth structure in such a way that no one will notice.
What to Expect During the Preparation Process
During the preparation process for porcelain veneers, local anesthetic is typically used in order to prevent discomfort on the part of the patient. The dentist carefully removes part of the enamel. An impression is taken of the tooth that has been prepped, and the impression is sent to a dental lab where the custom porcelain veneer will be fabricated.
Until the custom porcelain veneers are completed, patients will wear temporary veneers.
How long will I wear temporary veneers?
Temporary porcelain veneers will be worn for roughly a week to two weeks. This is the basic timeframe required for the porcelain veneers to be created by the dental lab and sent to the practice.
While wearing your temporary veneers, it's important to brush and floss regularly and to be careful about eating foods that are sticky or sugary.
Getting the Permanent Porcelain Veneers Placed
Once the finished porcelain veneers are completed, they will be sent back to the practice and the patient will return. The dentist will make a final check for fit and proper color match before the porcelain veneers are adhered in place.
