Straight and Simple: The Invisalign® Treatment Timeline
By Stephen Rogers on July 03, 2015
As you read this blog post, you may already be aware of some of the many advantages of the revolutionary Invisalign® system. For instance, you may already know that, unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign® aligners can be removed for between two and four hours every day so that patients can eat whatever they like, play contact sports without fear of cutting the insides of their mouths, and brush and floss with ease. You may also already realize that the aligners are made of a clear, virtually invisible plastic so that you can straighten your teeth without signaling to the world that you are undergoing orthodontic treatment.
But did you know that treatment with Invisalign® usually requires roughly the same amount of time as treatment with traditional metal braces? In fact, in some cases, patients may be able to achieve the same results they would achieve with metal braces in even less time with Invisalign®, depending on the severity of their orthodontic issues.
While the Invisalign® treatment timeline varies from patient to patient at Greater Long Island Dental, it generally does not differ substantially from what it would be with conspicuous, uncomfortable wire-and-bracket braces. Chalk up another win for Invisalign®.
Starting Your Invisalign® Treatment
Not all patients are good candidates for treatment with Invisalign®, including those with particularly severe orthodontic issues. However, most patients with gaps between teeth, overcrowding, overbites, underbites, open bites, and crossbites are suitable candidates.
Once it has been determined that you are a good candidate for Invisalign®, one of our dentists will create a 3D image of your teeth. This, along with a mold of your mouth, will be sent to a certified Invisalign® laboratory, where your customized aligners will be fabricated from a BPA-free plastic.
Your series of Invisalign® aligners will be unique to your mouth and treatment plan. You will have to wear your aligners every day for at least 20 hours in order for them to be optimally effective. If you are a parent investing in Invisalign® for your teenager, we also offer Invisalign® Teen, which has a special monitoring system that changes color when the aligners have been worn for the proper amount of time.
The Treatment Timeline
You will wear your first set of Invisalign® aligners for approximately two weeks. At that point, you will exchange the aligners for the next set in the series. Each set of aligners is shaped slightly differently so that your teeth will gradually but definitively be guided into their optimal positions. Every two weeks or so, you will trade out the current set of aligners you are wearing for the next in the series. You will return to Greater Long Island Dental approximately every six weeks - or every three aligners in your series - so that we can gauge how well your treatment is proceeding.
The number of aligners in your series and the length of your Invisalign® treatment will depend on the severity of your orthodontic issue and your overall goal for treatment. Usually, excellent results are achieved in about one year.
