What Is an Overbite?

An overbite is a condition in which the teeth do not properly align. It is characterized by the front teeth of the upper jaw overlapping the front teeth of the lower jaw. Overbites may result in the front teeth protruding forward. This is what many refer to as “buck teeth.” Overbites may also result in the jaw protruding forward. In severe overbite cases, the lower teeth may bite come into contact with the roof of the mouth.

Overbites can develop over time or may be hereditary. Overbites that are not hereditary and form over time may be caused by prolonged thumb-sucking, bottle use, pacifier use, nail biting, or tongue thrust (a swallowing reflex disorder).

Invisalign® Can Treat Overbites

Invisalign® may be used to treat a variety of mild to moderate alignment issues, including overbites. Invisalign® is often preferred over traditional orthodontics because it provides beautiful results without the need for metal braces. This is possible through the use of a series of clear aligner trays. Each set of trays is custom-made to gradually reposition the teeth to the desired alignment.

Aligner trays are worn for at least 22 hours per day for two weeks at a time before changing to a new set of trays. The aligner trays may be removed while eating, brushing, and flossing, making it easy to eat and care for the teeth while undergoing Invisalign® treatment. The length of time needed to complete Invisalign® treatment will vary based on the severity of the overbite but generally takes nine months to a year.

The Benefits of Treating Overbites with Invisalign®

Invisalign® orthodontics offer many benefits when used to treat overbites. Some of the most notable benefits include:

  • Comfortable treatment: The clear trays used in Invisalign® treatment are smooth and comfortable and won't cut the inside of the mouth like metal braces do.
  • Removable trays: Invisalign® trays may be removed for ease of brushing and flossing the teeth.
  • Discreet orthodontic treatment: Invisalign® trays are clear and virtually invisible, providing discreet orthodontic treatment.
  • Improves the overall appearance of the smile: Correcting alignment issues can improve the overall appearance of the smile.
