Teeth Whitening after Braces
By Stephen Rogers on November 20, 2018
If you have recently completed orthodontic treatment, or are counting down the days until you do, you may be considering other ways to enhance the appearance of your new smile. Many of our patients want to know the best way to whiten their teeth after their braces come off.
Here, our team at Greater Long Island Dental explains how teeth whitening after braces can deliver truly dramatic results. At our Long Island, NY practice, we offer both in-office and at-home teeth whitening treatments.
Tooth Discoloration and Braces
It is not uncommon for some patients to experience tooth discoloration after their braces come off. This can occur for a number of reasons.
For example, it can be difficult to clean around the metal brackets and wires effectively. As a result, food may become trapped. If not removed in a timely manner, plaque deposits can form. In most cases, this is what leads to discoloration.
In some instances, however, the accumulation of plaque can actually cause erosion of the natural tooth enamel. This changes the way that light reflects off the surfaces of the teeth, resulting in an uneven appearance.
Teeth Whitening Options
There are many ways to achieve a brighter, more dazzling smile. At Greater Long Island Dental, patients can choose between in-office whitening or take-home bleaching. In the sections below, we explore both options in more detail.
ZOOM!® In-office Teeth Whitening
Many patients choose this option because of its fast results. In most cases, this treatment can be performed in about an hour.
To begin, your hygienist will thoroughly clean the teeth, removing all food particles, plaque deposits, and debris. Next, a protective barrier is placed over the gums to protect them from sensitivity.
A concentrated bleaching gel will then be evenly applied to the teeth, and a special blue light will help activate the penetrating oxygen molecules.
After 15 minutes, the gel will be rinsed off and reapplied. This process is generally repeated about three times to achieve the desired results.
ZOOM! can lighten natural teeth up to eight shades in a single appointment.
NiteWhite® At-Home Teeth Whitening
Our dentist-supervised, at-home teeth whitening system is an excellent choice for patients who wish to brighten their smiles at their own convenience. In addition to whitening the teeth, NiteWhite actually helps restore enamel for improved oral health.
Although at-home whitening tends to take longer compared to in-office treatments, NiteWhite offers reduced wear-time. In fact, most patients notice a drastic enhancement after just three treatments.
When to Whiten Teeth after Braces
Once your braces come off, you can whiten your teeth at any point. However, it is important to note that whitening is not effective for dental restorations or veneers.
Therefore, if you are planning to enhance your smile with porcelain veneers or crowns, we can whiten the rest of your smile first.
