Teeth Whitening Maintenance
Undergoing professional teeth whitening in our office or using take-home kits can give you a smile that is multiple shades brighter with a minimal investment of time. A take-home NiteWhite® treatment allows you to brighten your smile at your own convenience, while an in-office ZOOM!® treatment can produce dramatic results after only an hour.
Although the results of these treatments are not permanent, our skilled dental professionals will take the time to educate you about teeth whitening maintenance. At Greater Long Island Dental near Long Island, NY, we will provide you with all of the information you need to maximize the results of your treatment. We invite you to reach out to our practice today to schedule an appointment.
Practice Good Oral Health Routines
Maintaining optimal oral health through consistent brushing and flossing, in addition to undergoing routine professional cleanings and oral exams, is the foundation of a bright smile. You should brush after every meal, or at least twice daily, and floss once a day to prevent the buildup of bacteria and remove stain-producing molecules. Using a toothpaste that contains whitening ingredients can also help to remove superficial stains from the surfaces of teeth. However, rather than brushing immediately after a meal, we advise patients to wait about 30 minutes so that they do not rub harmful sugars and other substances into their soft dental enamel. If you do not have a toothbrush on hand, we recommend chewing whitening gum or rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash or water.
Avoid Foods and Drinks that Stain
Certain foods and drinks — such as coffee, colas, and berries — can gradually darken or stain teeth. One of the best ways to maintain your newly whitened smile is to avoid or at least reduce your consumption of these staining agents. When you do consume any dark-colored beverages, using a straw can help the liquid to bypass your front teeth and prevent darkening.
Tobacco use can also greatly diminish the results of a whitening treatment, in addition to harming your overall health, so we strongly advise whitening patients to refrain from use.
Schedule a Touch-up Appointment
Since teeth whitening does not make teeth less susceptible to discoloration, your whitened smile can still darken over time, even if you are careful with your diet and practice exceptional oral hygiene. Fortunately, we can perform whitening touch-ups in our office to help you maintain optimal results. In some cases, a patient may be able to wait a full year before undergoing a touch-up, while others who smoke or frequently consume stain-causing beverages and foods will benefit from a touch-up treatment after a few months.
It is important to note that excessive whitening can cause permanent sensitivity and enamel erosion, so you should consult one of our dentists before performing any at-home whitening treatments.
