Caring for Your Teeth at Home
Daily dental hygiene is one of the most important ways to protect your smile. For optimal dental health, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste. While it is important to brush after meals, you should wait about half an hour after eating. If you brush too soon, you can rub acid and food particles into your teeth. While you are waiting, rinse out your mouth with water. You should also floss at least once a day, using gentle, gliding movements. Use curving motions to floss around your gum line. We also recommend that patients use antibacterial mouthwash at least once a day. Dr. Rogers and his team can provide further tips for proper dental care at home.
The Importance of Biannual Dental Visits
Brushing and flossing alone cannot remove plaque and tartar, which cause dental decay. For this reason, you should schedule regular checkups and cleanings at our office. We typically recommend that you come in every six months. However, if you have a history of gum disease or tooth decay, we may recommend more frequent appointments. At each visit, our hygienist will clean your teeth, and our dentists will look for the initial signs of cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer. We use advanced technology, such as digital x-rays and DIAGNOdent® laser cavity detection to make timely diagnoses and prevent further damage to your smile.
Sealants and Fluoride Treatments
We recommend sealants and fluoride treatments for all of our pediatric patients. Many adults choose to undergo these treatments as well. When your child’s permanent teeth start to come in, we will apply thin plastic sealants over the tops of their molars. After we harden the plastic coating with a curing light, it will form a barrier, preventing food and bacteria from accumulating in the deep groves.
Fluoride can greatly reduce the risk of dental decay. It is especially important that your children receive enough fluoride when their teeth are growing and developing. Our fluoride rinses will supplement their intake of fluoride from foods and water. As it is incorporated into the tooth structure, fluoride will strengthen the tooth and prevent demineralization. When used according to a dentist’s instruction, fluoride poses no health risks.
