Protect Your Teeth with Dental Sealants
To protect your teeth from cavities, we offer dental sealants at our Long Island, NY, practice. Dental sealants are thin, plastic-like coatings placed on young patients’ molars to prevent tooth decay. They can also benefit adults. Greater Long Island Dental treats patients of all ages to establish and maintain excellent oral health. With over 35 years of experience, our team is equipped to handle the oral health needs of your entire family.
About Dental Sealants
At-home oral hygiene is absolutely essential to oral health. However, even the most committed patients cannot completely eliminate harmful oral bacteria with brushing and flossing alone. That is why routine dental cleanings are necessary; the hygienist can effectively clean hard-to-reach areas that trap bacteria. In addition to regular cleanings, sealants are an excellent line of defense against cavities. The grooves on the chewing surfaces of the teeth can be incredibly difficult to clean properly. Much like a raincoat shields your clothes from the elements, dental sealants protect your teeth from bacteria. While sealants are not intended to be a replacement for proper brushing and flossing, they are an excellent supplemental treatment that can prevent a host of dental issues in the future.

Who Can Benefit from Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants are appropriate for patients of all ages. At our practice, we place them on children, teens, and adults. Sealants are quite common for younger patients, however, because the enamel on a baby tooth is not as strong as the enamel on an adult tooth. Generally, first molars erupt around the age of six, while second molars appear between the ages of 11 and 14. We recommend placing dental sealants as soon as these teeth erupt to protect them from cavities. During a consultation at Greater Long Island Dental, we can help determine if sealants are right for you or your child.
Dental Sealants Prevent the Need for More Invasive Treatment
Preventative procedures, such as cleanings, fluoride treatments, and dental sealants, are wise investments in your overall health and your oral health. These treatments are incredibly cost-effective because they can prevent the need for invasive restorative treatments later on. By choosing a quick and simple treatment now, you can save yourself a tremendous amount of time, worry, and money in the long run.
Dental Sealant Treatment Process
Before applying dental sealants, your doctor or hygienist will clean the teeth, removing any plaque, food, or debris. Next, the teeth are dried, and cotton is placed around them to absorb moisture. A clear liquid is then painted onto the chewing surfaces of the teeth and hardened with a dental curing light. This entire process can generally be completed in about five minutes in our office.
How Long Do Sealants Last?
In most cases, dental sealants can last up to 10 years with proper care and maintenance. However, it is important to have them assessed at every routine dental visit to make sure they are still functioning properly. Sealants can easily be reapplied when necessary.
