Need a Root Canal? Relax...
A root canal performed at our Long Island practice is a simple, virtually pain-free procedure – and, most importantly, it may make the difference between saving a tooth and losing it for good. A root canal can eliminate advanced decay and preserve the healthy portions of the tooth, which can subsequently serve as an anchor for a dental restoration.
If you are suffering from a prolonged or severe toothache, contact the office of Greater Long Island Dental and ask for an emergency appointment. We will make every effort to get you in to see a dentist as soon as possible.
Why Do I Need a Root Canal?
Beneath the enamel and dentin of your tooth is the inner pulp chamber, which contains nerves and blood vessels. The pulp chamber branches into canals that lead to the tip of your tooth roots. If a cavity progresses beyond the enamel and dentin into the pulp of your tooth, it can create pressure, pain, and eventual tooth loss. If you see a dentist in the early stages of this condition, your tooth can be saved with root canal therapy. If you wait too long, the tooth may need to be extracted and replaced with a prosthetic tooth.
Root Canal Therapy
The root canal therapy begins with a numbing anesthetic to maintain your comfort. The diseased portions of the tooth's outer structure are removed. Next, advanced tools are used to extract the infected pulp. The empty pulp chamber is then disinfected and filled completely with a biologically inert substance. The tooth is then sealed closed. If necessary, some alterations to the remaining healthy tooth structure may be necessary to make room for a dental crown.
Same-day Dental Crowns
In some cases, a simple filling alone is enough to restore a tooth following root canal therapy, but many times a dental crown is needed to provide adequate support.
Greater Long Island Dental offers root canal patients the convenience of a same-day crown created with our in-office CEREC® technology. After your root canal is complete, your crown can be custom-created and fabricated in house. CEREC® (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) uses computer-aided drafting (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technology. We will create a digital image of your tooth that will be used to guide computerized milling tools in creating your custom crown from a single block of porcelain. Thanks to this incredible technology, a process that traditionally takes weeks can be completed in about an hour. Once your crown is bonded in place, you will be ready to leave our office with a healthy, fully functional tooth.
