About Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped restoration, sometimes called a “cap,” which provides support and structure to a weakened or damaged tooth. Dental crowns are often placed on a tooth after a root canal. They can also be used to replace a single missing tooth in conjunction with a dental implant.

Traditionally, custom crowns have been created with the help of an off-site dental lab, requiring a temporary crown and a wait of two weeks or more for a permanent restoration. CEREC® technology has eliminated the need for a lab, a temporary crown, and a waiting period. Also, it's no longer necessary to deal with the messy impression molds and long periods of time spent with your mouth open, feeling uncomfortable. With this technology, the patient spends less time in the dentist’s chair. In a single, convenient appointment, you can leave our office with a durable, fully functional restoration.

Our CEREC® System

Our CEREC® technology includes computer-aided drafting (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), which allow the dentist to create a digital impression of your mouth and a three-dimensional model of your new crown. This digital material is transferred to our on-site milling machine, which creates your new, custom crown from a single block of porcelain.

Your Same-day Crown Appointment

After your initial exam and x-rays, the same-day crown process begins with preparation of the tooth to ensure it is clean and ready to be sealed. Once numbing anesthetic is administered, the dentist removes all decayed or damaged material from the tooth. In some cases, enamel will also be removed to make room for the crown.

The dentist then uses the CAD-CAM technology to create a digital blueprint for your new crown. This includes shade-matching, which ensures the crown will blend in with your teeth and look completely natural. Once the milling machine has created the crown, the dentist will check the fit, then clean and buff the restoration. Finally, the crown is secured into place with dental bonding material.

When you leave our office, you will have a fully-restored smile, a feeling of accomplishment, and the rest of the day to enjoy!
