Periodontal disease is any inflammation that affects both the tissue, being the gums, and the bone. Periodontal disease develops from bacteria being allowed to stay in your mouth for a certain period of time. The signs of periodontal disease may be insidious. Sometimes people don't know. That's why it's so important to have your hygienist check all the time. Although there can be visible signs, this includes redness or any type of swelling or inflammation around the teeth. Periodontal disease can definitely lead to other conditions. There has been a close association between diabetes and periodontal disease. It's bidirectional. One doesn't cause the other, but one can accelerate the other. The best way to prevent periodontal disease is to limit the bacteria in your mouth. It's by taking care of your mouth properly at home, brushing at least two times a day, using dental floss. There are some great oral rinses to really suppress the bacteria. The other important thing is everybody needs some professional care. I'm a dentist. I need professional care to help me keep my mouth at a level where I don't have any problems. We work with our patients to prevent periodontal disease by always educating them. There are new thoughts and new ideas, and everybody gets their own plan on how to take care of their teeth. Some people are bacterially resistant. They don't need as much. Other people, we need to change the pH of their saliva on a routine basis meaning daily. If someone exhibits any of the signs of periodontal disease, I think they should call our office as soon as possible, and we can develop a plan for them.
